        <description>This panel, recorded on May 28th, 2026, brought together experts from civil society and government to discuss alternative academic careers. Featured speakers were Dr. Katie Fallon, Dr. Tina M. Park, and Dr. Anthony J. Williams. The event was moderated by DAIR Institute Director of Research Dr. Alex Hanna. Dr. Katie Fallon is a Principal Policy Associate at the Urban Institute and acts as a Senior Policy Advisor to the Columbus City Council. Her work focuses primarily on housing affordability and access, including a focus on affordable housing development, barriers to accessing housing, and policy solutions to housing instability and homelessness. Dr. Tina M. Park is a sociologist and the Executive Director of Upturn, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing equity and justice in the design, governance, and use of technology through research and advocacy. Her sociological scholarship focuses on the quantification of human experiences for digital platforms, the impact of AI systems and products on socially marginalized communities, and the relationship of digital technology and racial colonial capitalism. Dr. Anthony J. Williams is an abolitionist sociologist. Their work examines racism and the carceral continuum across both prisons and public urban spaces. At the Spencer Foundation, Williams reads across all grant programs, project manages the Vision Grant Cohort Learning Series, co-leads the Racial Equity Grant program, and project manages convening with external research, practice, policy, and grantee partners. This panel was sponsored by the American Sociological Association Section on Science, Knowledge, and Technology, the American Sociological Association Section on Children and Youth, and DAIR.</description>
